Fox is locking the doors on House. As had been expected for months, the network has decided that this will be the final season of House on Fox.
And although producer Universal TV maintain the rights to now shop the show elsewhere, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt has already said that he wouldn’t seek to move it onto his network. Plus, star Hugh Laurie (whose deal expires at the end of this year) has also made it clear in past interviews that he’s ready to move on – and perhaps focus on his burgeoning singing career.
Series executive producer David Shore has been asking Fox for months to set an end date for the show, in order to give the hit drama its proper farewell. House remains a solid performer for Fox, averaging a 3.5 rating and 9 share among adults 18-49 (placing it 32nd overall) and 9.1 million viewers. That’s why some questioned whether the show would really end its run this year. Universal is said to have pitched hard to keep the show alive, but for now, at least, it appears to be the end of the run.
Beyond Laurie’s desire to move on, there’s also the fact of the matter that House is now in its eighth season, which means it has evolved into a pricy production – and a network’s license fee at this point in the game is usually required to cover the cost of production plus a premium. The show’s escalating costs led to a standoff last spring between Fox and Universal over a renewal; a deal was eventually struck, but budget cuts led to the departure of key castmember Lisa Edelstein, among other things.
After last spring’s tough re-negotiation, Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly said it was “pretty likely” that this was its final year. Reilly later told reporters that a concrete decision would be made by mid-fall—but decided to wait a bit longer to see how its new Monday night dramas performed. And although Alcatraz took a dip this week opposite the launch of NBC’s The Voice, the J.J. Abrams drama has performed strong for Fox and is a shoo-in for renewal. Fox’s new Kiefer Sutherland drama Touch, which debuts its regular run on Mondays next Month, also performed well in its Jan. 25 preview – giving Fox yet another reason to retire House.
“I think we have just been avoiding it, to be honest with you,” Reilly said in January at the TV Critics Assn. press tour. “It’s hard to imagine the network without House. And, really, we are all going to sit down. This is not going to be like the pink slip goes out, and that’s the end of House. David and Hugh and the whole crew have been very busy. They are doing great work… We are going to size everything up. You know, it’s no secret. Last year, we said it was going to be a close call, and probably it’s the last year, but, honestly, we just simply haven’t made the decision.”
At the time, Reilly also called the House cast and crew “so professionally, consistently, creatively tenacious. They are collaborative, responsible. Hugh is not only a great actor but an incredible leader for his sort of organization. So it’s just really the dream scenario with that show, and that’s why it makes it a very hard decision, and, honestly, one that I hope we can make together, and I think we will.”
Last fall, a production insider told TV Guide Magazine, “if it’s truly over, eight years has been a good run. We’ll have finished up with (more than) 175 episodes.”
Announcement from HOUSE Executive Producers David Shore, Katie Jacobs and Hugh Laurie
After much deliberation, the producers of House M.D. have decided that this season of the show, the 8th, should be the last. By April this year they will have completed 177 episodes, which is about 175 more than anyone expected back in 2004.
The decision to end the show now, or ever, is a painful one, as it risks putting asunder hundreds of close friendships that have developed over the last eight years – but also because the show itself has been a source of great pride to everyone involved.
Since it began, House has aspired to offer a coherent and satisfying world in which everlasting human questions of ethics and emotion, logic and truth, could be examined, played out, and occasionally answered. This sounds like fancy talk, but it really isn’t. House has, in its time, intrigued audiences around the world in vast numbers, and has shown that there is a strong appetite for television drama that relies on more than prettiness or gun play.
But now that time is drawing to a close. The producers have always imagined House as an enigmatic creature; he should never be the last one to leave the party. How much better to disappear before the music stops, while there is still some promise and mystique in the air.
The producers can never sufficiently express their gratitude to the hundreds of dedicated artists and technicians who have given so generously of their energy and talent to make House the show it has been – and perhaps will continue to be for some time, on one cable network or another.
The makers of House would also like to thank Fox Broadcasting and Universal Television for supporting the show with patience, imagination and large quantities of good taste. The Studio-As-Evil-Adversary is one of the many clichés that House has managed to avoid, and for that the cast and crew are deeply grateful.
Lastly, the audience: some have come and some have gone, obviously. This is to be expected in the life of any show. But over the course of the last eight years, the producers of House have felt immensely honored to be the subject of such close attention by an intelligent, discriminating, humane and thoughtful – not to mention numerous – audience. Even the show’s detractors have been flattering in their way. Making the show has felt like a lively and passionate discussion about as many different subjects as could possibly be raised in 177 hours. The devotion and generosity of our viewers has been marvelous to behold.
So, finally, everyone at House will bid farewell to the audience and to each other with more than a few tears, but also with a deep feeling of gratitude for the grand adventure they have been privileged to enjoy for the last eight years. If the show lives on somewhere, with somebody, as a fond memory, then that is a precious feat, of which we will always be proud.
Everybody Lies.
STATEMENT FROM KEVIN REILLY, PRESIDENT, ENTERTAINMENT, FOX BROADCASTING COMPANY:
While it’s with much regret, and a lump in our throats, we respect the decision Hugh, David and Katie have made. A true original, on the page and amazingly brought to life by Hugh Laurie, there is only one Dr. House. For eight seasons, the entire HOUSE team has given us – and fans around the world – some of the most compelling characters and affecting stories ever seen on television. They have been creatively tenacious and collaborative throughout this incredible run, and they are amongst the most superior talents in the business. For all the above, we wholeheartedly thank them, and the fans who have supported the show.

Its being reported by TV Line that Odette Annable will not be a regular on “Breaking In”, she will be a recurring cast member!
As for the rest of the ensemble: TVLine has learned that Odette Annable, who during Breaking In‘s brief canceled state joined the cast of Fox’s House, will reprise her role of savvy, sexy Melanie in “multiple episodes” but not reclaim series regular status.
The show returns to FOX on March 6, airing Tuesdays at 8:30/7:30c.
Great news! The season 2 premiere of “Breaking In” will be on Tuesday, March 6th at 8:30-9:00 PM on Fox!
Dave Annable has survived his first year of marriage — with a few battle wounds, of course.
“Marriage is going well. It’s officially four puncture wounds with a steak knife to the kidney — I can survive. I figured that out in the first year of marriage,” he joked to Us Weekly at the What’s Your Number? premiere in Westwood, Calif. Monday. “If [Odette] hears me say that joke one more time, by the way…I’m trying to make it quicker, but there is a long build up!”
The couple, who tied the knot in Ojai, Calif. on October 10, 2010, will celebrate their first wedding anniversary at their pal Beaver’s wedding in New York.
“We’ll pretend it’s ours, selfishly!” Dave, 32, joked. “Sometimes you go to weddings and you’re not sure about the groom or the bride, but this is going to be good fun. They’re meant to be together and we’re going to party our faces off!”
Per tradition, couples celebrating their one-year anniversary should exchange paper presents — and like a good husband, the actor asked Odette, 26, for some gift-giving advice.
“I actually just asked her, ‘Wait, how do we do this? Do you get me something?” he said. “‘Should we get pizza? What’s the deal?’”
As long as he remembers to get the House M.D. star something, Dave should be in the clear. “I’ve learned that very quickly!” he laughed.

Here’s some more news about the renewal of “Breaking In” from AOL TV!
Now it’s official: Against all odds, ‘Breaking In’ has officially been renewed for a 13-episode second season on Fox.
“‘Breaking In’ is a creatively vibrant and wildly adventurous comedy,” said Kevin Reilly, Fox’s entertainment president, in a statement. “We are looking forward to bringing it back for a second season and continuing our relationship with this incredibly talented cast and these fantastic creators — Adam Goldberg and Seth Gordon. We can’t wait to see where they take these characters next year.”
‘Breaking In’ follows an unorthodox security team headed by Christian Slater, and also stars Bret Harriso, Alphonso McAuley and Odette Annable. According to a report yesterday, although Annable has signed on as a new series regular on ‘House,’ she has a provision in her contract that allows her to return to ‘Breaking In’ in the event of a second season.
‘Breaking In’ joins an elite group of shows that returned from cancellation, which includes ‘Family Guy,’ ‘Futurama,’ ‘Jericho’ and ’7th Heaven.’ It’ll be Slater’s first show to last more than a season — previously, ‘The Forgotten’ and ‘My Own Worst Enemy’ lasted one season each.
This isn’t ‘Breaking In”s first resurrection — Fox originally passed on the pilot, but brought it back as a midseason show earlier this year. No official premiere date for Season 2 has been announced except that it will return in 2012.
In an unusual twist of fate, the Fox comedy series Breaking In has essentially been resurrected. Back in May it was announced that Breaking In had been canceled by the network. At the time this was an unusual move because while the ratings weren’t stellar, they also weren’t terrible, and many people were plerplexed by Fox’s decision to cancel the show.
Deadline is now reporting that Fox will be bringing the show back with a 13 episode order for its midseason schedule. The Breaking In pilot was originally ordered for the 2009-2010 season, but was never picked up by Fox. Sony Pictures TV kept the show alive by extending the contract options for cast members. In November 2010, Fox decided to order 7 episodes of the show and agreed to air them after American Idol in the spring. The show bounced around on the schedule and then was ultimately canceled before it could finish its initial run. But Sony TV kept fighting for the series and now Breaking In joins Family Guy as the only shows to survive multiple cancellations.
Despite the fact that cast member Odette Annable has joined House as a new regular, she and the rest of the original cast will return for Breaking In’s second season. Hopefully we’ll hear news of the premiere date later in the fall.

Odette Annable has joined the cast of House as a series regular for Season 8, TVGuide.com has confirmed.
Annable, 26, who co-starred on Fox’s midseason comedy Breaking In, has signed on to play a prison doctor who House (Hugh Laurie) meets while behind bars, Deadline.com reports. The cranky doc will invite her character to join his team of colleagues at Princeton-Plainsboro — which is much smaller these days since Lisa Edelstein and Amber Tamblyn have left the show and Olivia Wilde is still splitting her time between shooting movies and filming the series.
As such, Annable will be the show’s only female regular, opposite Laurie, Jesse Spencer, Omar Epps, Robert Sean Leonard and Peter Jacobson.
So what does this mean for Breaking In‘s chances for renewal? Fox appeared to cancel the series, which also stars Christian Slater and Bret Harrison, in the network’s season-end slaughter. According to Deadline, though, Annable’s contract allows her time to shoot on Breaking should Fox renew it. Reps for the Fox series declined to comment on how Annable’s role on House will affect Breaking In.
Annable also recently appeared on Brothers & Sisters‘ final season, as a love interest for Justin (Dave Annable, aka her husband).

NEW YORK, May 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — On May 21st, Bryan Greenberg, musician and star of HBO’s “How to Make it in America,” will host The Olevolos Project’s May 21st Brunch Party at New York City’s Le Cirque on 151 E. 58th Street from 1:00-4:00pm. The proceeds from the ticket sales to the open bar brunch and silent auction will benefit children of the village of Olevolos, Tanzania. On his first trip to Africa, Bryan visited his cousin Dory Gannes in Tanzania, Africa, where he was deeply moved by the philanthropic work she had started. The Olevolos Project, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was formed to benefit orphans and disadvantaged children in the local village of Olevolos. Two years after opening their doors, the fledgling organization continues to work tirelessly to develop young leaders in the village through formal schooling, tutoring programs, and extra-curricular activities.
“We believe that all kids have a right to meet their full potential; but in our world today, too many kids never get a chance,” says Dory Gannes, The Olevolos Project Founder. “In January, 2010, we opened our doors to the first class of nursery school students; this year, we welcomed our second class. We have also started three community initiatives: an adolescent counseling group, a youth recreational program, and a women’s microsavings group, in addition to our ongoing educational sponsorship program.”
Bryan’s contagious enthusiasm and passion for The Olevolos Project brought HBO, Don Julio, Brandsway Creative team and Exquisite Surfaces on board to help coordinate and produce this fundraising project. An anonymous donor will match each dollar raised on May 21st up to $25,000.
“I’m trying to raise money to build an extension onto the orphanage so that they have a library,” says Greenberg. “I’m just trying to help out a little bit, and these kids are amazing, and I want to give them an opportunity.”
To help spread the word about this fundraising effort, Greenberg created a Host Committee consisting of Alexis Nataf & Melanie Nataf, Dave Annable & Odette Annable, Dory Gannes, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Eugene Remm, Gabe Saporta, Gina Gershon, Geoff Stults, Hilarie Burton, Ian Edelman, Jamie Hector, Jared Jeffries & Jenni Jeffries, Jonathan Azu & Rosa Azu, Justin Long, Kelly Brady, Lake Bell, Luis Guzman, Mark Birnbaum, Margarita Levieva, Matt Levine, Rabia Ahmad and Victor Rasuk.
MORE
The cast of THE DOUBLE continues to add talent, this time adding Martin Sheen, Stna Katic and Odette Yustman to the cast that already included Richard Gere, Topher Grace and Stephen Moyer. No word on who they’ll play, but Gere and Grace play CIA agents that attempt to track down the murderer of a US senator. True Blood’s Stephen Moyer will play the Russian spy, and arch-rival of Gere’s, that’s accused of the murder.
I can’t imagine Martin Sheen as anything other than the CIA director or office type that barks out the orders to Grace and Gere. And of course, Yustman will play some sort of love interest. The film sounds like a fun ride and I’m looking forward to Topher Grace breaking out of his quirky college kid persona.
